Downtown Miami

Miami’s downtown is a place for government, finance and international business.

Welcome to Downtown Miami

“Buyers attracted to downtown Miami want the world at their fingertips,” says Jennifer Brough, a REALTOR® with Jennifer Homes Realty. “Miami is a city with many flavors, and downtown is a hub for it all. In many ways, it’s like the new South Beach for graduates, rising professionals and young families.”

Condominiums in the downtown area range in price depending on the age of the building, its amenities and the size of the unit. A studio-sized apartment, for example, starts at $300,000. When you add bedrooms and community amenities, such as a pool, a fitness room or a theater room, the price can go as high as $850,000 — or if the condo is in a luxury, high-end building, $3 million or higher. “When you get into the millions,” Brough says, “the buildings have the feel of five-star hotels. Some even have private elevators and pools — the bay views are sensational.”

With Brickell shopping and Coconut Grove marinas to the south, the famous South Beach Art Deco District to the east and the Wynwood Arts District to the north, it’s no wonder that downtown living happens near the waterfront. In fact, the largest park in the neighborhood is Bayfront Park, a 32-acre public green space that sits right on Biscayne Bay. With winding walkways, a stunning fountain, performance venues and a children’s playground, the park is the perfect place to enjoy the Miami weather or attend special events like March's Ultra Music Festival. And fun on the waterfront doesn’t stop there. Walk a few blocks north, and you can explore more than 70 stores and restaurants at Bayside Marketplace. Continuing north brings you to the Kaseya Center, where the Miami Heat and big-name entertainers play to thousands. Go a little farther, and you’ll wind up at Maurice A. Ferré Park, home to the Pérez Art Museum Miami and the Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science, each a rich cultural experience.

For residents with children, the downtown has two neighborhood schools, and both are exceptional. New World School for the Arts, which operates through an educational partnership with Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Miami Dade College and the University of Florida, is one of the best public high schools for the arts in Florida. It has also received numerous recognitions and awards, including a Magnet School of America School of Excellence Award in 2023. The Downtown Miami Charter School also receives above-average marks for its student math and reading proficiencies. Its leadership academies in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and in the arts help students build the skills they’ll need for professional success. Other schools serving the neighborhood include Frederick R. Douglas Elementary, Jose De Diego Middle School and Booker T. Washington Senior High. A handful of colleges, including Dade Medical College, also have campuses downtown.

Public demand for a grocer prompted Whole Foods to open a store a few blocks from the Brickell Bridge. And pharmacies, clothing stores and other retailers are scattered throughout downtown, most from Northwest First Ave to the bay, while restaurants are everywhere. Near Whole Foods, for example, is Ristorante Fratelli Milano, a family-owned eatery started by brothers Roberto and Emanuele Bearzi. Try their Fiocchi Di Pera (pasta filled with pear and taleggio cheese in a buttery sage sauce) or the scaloppine al limone (veal medallions in white wine with lemon and capers atop arugula, goat cheese, tomatoes and roasted potatoes). For an after-dinner cocktail, head over to the Tipsy Flamingo for groovy tunes and one of their signature drinks. A Piña But Not Colada will sweeten your evening with Ilegal Mezcal Joven, rich Demerara, pineapple shrub and lime.

While Miami’s downtown is a place for government, finance and international business, it’s also perfect for city dwellers who want to be right in the middle of the action.
