Tropical canopies mingle with historic buildings in Coconut Grove, Miami's oldest neighborhood. The area was settled in the late 19th century, and it briefly became its own city in the beginning of the 20th century before being annexed by Miami.
 
Coconut Grove, specifically its southwestern neighborhood, has retained much of its lively tropical color and character amid modern growth. A house in Southwest Coconut Grove tends to feature the stucco walls and terracotta-tiled roof of Mediterranean style, or the intentional simplicity and defined shapes of more modern architecture. There are single- and multilevel houses and townhomes available in these styles, along with apartments and condos.
 
Coconut Grove’s historic buildings, including the 19th-century Barnacle house, are just outside the neighborhood’s borders. Tours of the house include opportunities to spot pelicans, herons and other Florida birds.
 
Leathery banyan leaves mingle with palm and oak leaves in the canopies above Southwest Coconut Grove, providing soft shade and abundant greenery that stretches through the neighborhood’s parks. Merrie Christmas Park sits on the western part of the neighborhood and includes a large playground amid stunning trees.
 
For more nature, spot live peacocks roaming the grounds and marvel at the fusion of Spanish and Asian architecture at the Kampong, a local botanical garden.
 
The neighborhood's Frances S. Tucker Elementary School offers a specialized curriculum through its STArts Magnet Program, which emphasizes science, technology and dance or kinetic movement.
 
Public transport and proximity to Route 1 give residents access to all of Miami.
 
Casual dining in Southwest Coconut Grove is plentiful. Shore to Door Fish Market offers take-out meals and wrapped fish as well as outdoor seating with lawn games and cold drinks for a laid-back dining experience. For a pick-me-up, Coffee Resources takes pride in its international imports.
 
For retail, the neighborhood's downtown area is home to independent boutiques including trendy clothier LoveShackFancy. Nearby, the Cocowalk open-air shopping center features green walkable spaces amid boutiques, artisanal restaurants and rentable office spaces for startups and established businesses.
 
The community itself offers outreach and educational resources at centers like the Barnyard, owned by Coconut Grove Cares. The community nonprofit offers after-school and summer programs, along with social work and outreach initiatives.
 
Merrie Christmas Park and Esther Mae Armbrister Park offer playgrounds, while Armbrister and Coconut Grove Cares Park have baseball fields and tennis courts, respectively.
 
Grand Avenue hosts the weekly Saturday Organic Farmer’s Market, where local organic growers offer fruits, vegetables, grains and seeds along with rare crops from around the world.
 
Just a couple miles up the shore, the greater Coconut Cove area hosts an annual arts festival on President’s Day weekend. The three-day outdoor festival showcases hundreds of artists and includes culinary displays and live performances.
 
Being right on Biscayne Bay, residents take advantage of local marinas. Jet-ski rentals offer high-speed fun, charter boats are available for fishing, and the pier itself offers views of the bay and the far-off islands.
